Superintendent Search Process

Superintendent Robert Laney announced his plan to retire on June 30, 2018, and the School Board formally accepted Mr. Laney's retirement letter at the meeting on November 15, 2017.  The School Board contracted with School Exec Connect, a superintendent search firm, to assist with the search for a new superintendent.  

School Exec Connect consultants Dr. Kenneth (Ken) Dragseth and Dr. Antoinette (Toni) Johns met with board members, school staff, parents, students and community members individually and in groups to determine the challenges, strengths, goals of our district and preferred characteristics or skills in a superintendent.   

Using this information, the consultants developed the following profile of the desired skills and characteristics in the next superintendent and presented the profile to the School Board on December 19, 2017.

Here are the next steps in the search process:

• December-February 2018:  The position will be advertised and candidates will be recruited nationally.
• February 20, 2018:  Board and consultants will meet to review and select candidates to be initially interviewed.
• February 21, 22, 2018:  The Board will interview five or six recommended candidates and narrow to two or three finalists.
• February 26-28, 2018:  The finalists will be invited for an all day interview process including open forums that will be available to staff, students and community members and a final formal Board interview.
The Board will ask staff, students and community to provide input into the selection by participating in an open question and answer session with each candidate and completing a feedback sheet to be shared with the Board.

November 20  Set up Internet feedback for community/staff/students and Stakeholder letter to explain process
November 30  Meet with Board, staff, students and community for input into the “New Superintendent Profile”
December 19  Develop “New Superintendent Profile” and submit report on findings to Board.  Board accepts criteria desired in next superintendent
December-February  Recruit candidates
February 20  Five to six candidates presented to Board
February 21-22  First Board Interviews (5:00, 6:15, 7:30 each evening)
February 22   Board narrows choice to two or three
February 26, 27, 28  All Day Interview Process: Community/staff/students interview finalists and Board conducts second interview/dinner
February 27 or 28  Board narrows choice to one
March           Negotiate contract
March 27      Board action on superintendent’s contract
July 1, 2018  Superintendent assumes duties
